Post a short blurb about your project. Think of this as a shortened version of an abstract. We will use this blurb as part of the conference presentation program for our end of term presentations. This first posting is due on 4/18/2016 before class.
NOTE: as a group, you will be tasked with articulating a blurb that provides a broad vision for the panel as a whole. (This may be a challenge depending on how closely linked your topics are). In addition to articulating your own blurb, each participant must also articulate a blurb that covers the entire panel. This posting that covers the entire panel is due by 4/25/2016 before the start of class.
Once all the entries are posted, the group will make a decision as to which blurb is the best and which one will be included in the conference presentation program.
My study examined the relationship between the stigma surrounding depression and people’s willingness to go get help. After surveying about 100 people on the University of Central Florida campus and through Facebook the result I obtained were rather shocking. For one, we discovered that most people know and understand the stigma around depression, which to brings to question the impact the stigma may have on this particular group of people. I also discovered that although most people know and understand the stigma, this didn’t stop them from actively seeking help. So at what step are we in eliminating the stigma altogether? What would be the next best thing to help?
ReplyDeleteCommunication disorders can affect a wide variety of the population from a 4 year old child with a stuttering problem to an elderly person with dementia. When one thinks of the affects that a speech problem has on someone they tend to focus on the physical aspects, such as the way the mouth moves incorrectly. However, a very serious issue that arises as a result of communication disorders is the affect it can have on one's social life. How exactly does a speech impediment affect someone’s social life and how can one overcome those issues to live a normal social life.

ReplyDeleteMy research delves into the influences and interrelationships of musical genres. The central argument is that all musical genres are somehow a component of, or influenced by another genre of music. To answer this, I conducted reviews of scholarly articles, as well as 5 interviews with professors of music at the University of Central Florida. What I discovered was that music is heavily an art form of recreation, deconstruction, and reconstruction. In the genres of jazz, classical, rock-n-roll, and R&B, there are copied melodies, and similar harmonic tendencies. Both in the literature, and the interviews, genre to genre connections were acknowledged, and labeled as an overall timbre, or a melodic idea. In fact, in the interviews, professors refer to the essences that change, as so much of each genre is a product of a previous genre.
ReplyDeleteThe mind is very powerful, and lots of studies have shown a connection between positive mental practices and recovery from illness and injury. it seems that pro athletes are able to recover from injury faster than the average person, but no studies have been conducted to find out why. I'm looking to see if professional athletes athletes use mental skills (positive outlook, imagery, etc.) to speed up recovery, that most people don't.
ReplyDeleteFor years, researchers have questioned the effect of music on the enhancement of memory. Extensive studies have been conducted to formulate some cohesion of answers as to why music can positively or negatively impact the cognitive performance of an individual. The correlations between age, experience with music, and exposure to music have played key roles n the choice of subjects for several music and memory experiments. Although we can observe whether music inhibits or enhances memory through testing, it is still unclear as to which processes work together within the brain that produce these results. Wishing my experiment I interviewed individuals and observed their results to my testing as well as their overall focus in the presence of two different stimuli. I then drew conclusions that positively correlated with my hypothesis, which claims that music enhances the information retention within student athletes.
ReplyDeleteThe mind is a powerful thing, and we do everything in our power to use it as much as we can from creating beautiful pieces of music, to using it to help heal ourselves quicker and determining what colors help drive business. Once we open up and gain access to more parts of our brain there is no telling what we will be able to do. But first we must make sure that our minds are healthy and sound.
ReplyDeleteThere is so much about the mind we don't understand. Unlocking it's secrets could help us gain a greater understanding of concepts we've never been able to fully explain or comprehend. With this new knowledge we can change the world by changing ourselves.
