Revised Research Plan (Due 3/4 by 11:59pm)

The revised research plan is where you will describe how you will occupy the niche you identified in the literature review. Spend some time reviewing how the literature review sections transition into methodology sections of the student research papers we have read this term, and then decide on a method most appropriate for your topic. We will talk extensively about the methods section of your paper in class over the next few meetings.

The Task: Write a planning document that outlines the following:
1) Your research question: Write a paragraph describing your question and how you arrived at that question. Remember, your question may have changed since you first started your project. Use sources from your literature review to describe your niche.

2) The data you plan to collect to answer the question--ie, who you plan to study.

3) How you will go about doing that research. Be as specific as possible about the number of research subjects, how the research subjects will be chosen, and what you will do (interview, survey, observation, focus group, textual analysis, and so on).

  1. My research question is: How do musical genres interrelate? My research question, inspired by knowledge gained through my musical career, aims to discuss and label instances of direct influence across musical genres. After initiating the idea of researching influences across the influences of jazz and classical music, I discovered articles that extend into the harmonic similarities in rock'n'roll. The niche I will occupy follows the work of Liesa Norman in analyzing influences, and the background of influence in music that is emphasized by Mark Gridley, and will center around labeling correlations between genres.

The data I plan use to prove my claims will be mostly comprised of information from the work of Norman, Gridley, Berliner, Murphy, and Sherrane, and will either be direct citation of claims from their work, or intertextual connections between two or more works.

To do my research, I will be analyzing 12 (or more) academic articles for both framing and direct evidence that supports influence across genres. In addition, I will be composing a 15 min verbal interview with 5 of the music professors here at UCF, including our head of jazz studies.

  2. The purpose of my research is to understand how intimate relationships between millennial aged couples are affected by traditional gender roles. I read an article online written by a frat guy on how the “perfect girlfriend” in college should act. The article was so blatantly sexist and offensive to women. This got me thinking about the presence of traditional gender roles in today’s society. Although we live in a society that is very accepting of personal differences and of people identifying as any gender they please, it is clear that gender roles are still held to high esteem. At the end of this project I hope to bring attention to the extent that traditional gender roles still influence relationships.

In my study, the focus will be on students at University of Central Florida. This hits all of the niches I plan to fulfill. A majority of the research done before me 1) has only focused on the female’s perspective of her relationship 2) has focused on married couples and 3) is based on outdated data.

My research will be conducted via a two-part web based survey. The first part of the survey will be the Bem Sex Role Inventory. This measures the degree of masculinity or femininity in an individual based on a self report. The BSRI value will give an estimate of the degree of which the member upholds traditional gender roles (ie: a higher masculinity value would be correlated with a higher emphasis on traditional gender roles). The second part of the survey will ask each member of the dyad specific questions evaluating their personal satisfaction with their relationship. From there, the empirical data will be sorted and analyzed for any specific trends that would accept or refute the hypothesis.

  4. My research question is “How do deep webs affect our society and what do we really know about it?” I have always been interested in the topic, and I’ve found out in the past few months that a lot of people don’t even know what the deep web is or what it does. I also found that there is no research on why people don’t know about the topic, or what the most common things to know about it are.

I plan to collect data about the knowledge on the deep web from different age groups in the population to see if this affects whether you know about this or not, and also by major or concentration to make comparisons about this too.

My research will involve a survey that is comprised of about 10 to 15 questions, the first couple questions will be about general information about the subject, and the rest will be general knowledge about the deep web and in-depth knowledge about it. The data from this survey will be used to compare the different age groups and areas of study regarding their knowledge about the deep web.

  5. My research question is to what extent has the recent research with CTE and concussion studies had an impact on youth/high school sports? What can be determined for the future of sports based on what is being done currently and the reactions of those involved? My interest and essential passion for sports, football in particular, had be wondering about something that I could do research on and actually get something out of it. I knew I wanted to do something sports related and after some thought I knew that I could find a lot of material on what has become a highly controversial part of the game in recent years. Throughout a lot of my reading I found that although there was a lot of information giving facts about concussions and the effects it can have, I wasn’t reading a lot on the players and coaches reactions involved in it. There was plenty to read about parents and people outside of the sports being critical, but not the ones being most affected by it. Another thing I wanted to do was try and figure a way to bring more attention to this issue. From reading about Tracey Covassin’s study, I was shown that there is still a lot of work to be done especially from the position of coaches and league officials.
A big focus for conducting my study will be interviewing and getting information from current athletes at collegiate levels and down. I also will speak with coaches or parents that are involved in it. I will also consult more research articles to pull together more information.
What I hope to achieve through interviews and meetings is at least two players/coaches from collegiate, high school, and Pop Warner/youth sport levels. I will hope to have a variety in terms of what sports these individuals are associated with. I will also be conducting an observation period over a high school football practice to see if there are any flaws or positives I find in how they go about their drills. There will be textual analysis involved as I consult research articles in an effort to find out what moves need to be made in order for these concussion numbers to go down and what else needs to be done.

  6. My research question: What makes e-Sports sports? I propose this question because I recently joined the community and I have ran into a constant issue. When I try to explain it to someone, they seem to ignore the legitimacy of such a sport, and not giving it any kind of merit. This is because they don't know anything about the culture of e-Sports. My aim of this research is to give detailed insight into the culture and what makes it more than just a simple competition. In my research, I realize that a lot of the articles that I find mention South Korea only briefly, which is a missed opportunity because Korea embodies the Culture of e-sports and how it it should be in the U.S.

With this, I plan to do extensive research on South Korea and their culture. Whether it be textual analysis on various articles on South Korea E-sports, or watch the various documentaries that have surfaced on the internet. I also want to Research various interview with athletes from Korea, and although it might be a bit of a reach, try and conduct my own interview.

  7. My question is what is the general consensus on bitcoin and how does this affect its legal status. I have always been interested in the new opportunities in which bitcoin presents and the ways in which it solves problems within the financial world. Therefore I am greatly interested in seeing hoe the publics perception on the currency relates to the ways in which the government looks at it.

With this I will use a survey to gauge the publics opinion on bitcoin in order to form a clearer picture on how it is looked upon. With this I can analyze how legislation has been impacted by public opinion.

  8. I have changed my research question almost ten times. It started with ‘which factors affect viewers news channel choice’ and then evolved into ‘how does technology and social media affect the reporting of current events.’ However, neither of these inquiry questions could be easily tested by me, so instead, my final question is ‘how does social media affect the mental health of young adults?’ The way that I came about this question, was from reading more and more about social media in various articles. It seemed as though many scholars studied social media benefits and negative affects on the world, but not enough about the effects on mental health. In three different articles that I initially used for my first article, I was drawn to the research strictly on social media.

For this research, I plan to study young adults. This is the range of 17-21. I chose this age group, mostly because these are the ages of people I know, but also because this is the age group that has truly grown up during the evolution of social media.

In order to go about this research, I will give a survey to 15-20 participants within the age range of 17 and 21. The only requirements, is that they will have to be regular social media users. The questions on the survey will be written by different scholars who have previously researched social media and mental health, but I will add combine many different surveys to find the most realistic answers.

  9. My original research question was, ‘How has the wealth inequality in America contributed to current racial tensions?’, but after reading many peer-reviewed journals on the topics of wealth and income inequality and how this affects our society today, I have decided to edit my question to, ‘How is the widening gap of wealth inequality affecting American society today?’. Through my Annotated Bibliography I was able to see many correlations between wealth and racial tensions, but also between other things. Also, most researchers didn’t only focus on wealthy inequality like in my original question, but on a variety of things like income inequality (which is very different from wealth inequality), wealth distribution, and laws of succession which all play a role in what is happening in America today. My inspiration for this topic was a video my Sociology teacher last Fall Semester showed us in class about the Wealth Inequality in the United States and how unevenly and unfairly the money is distributed in the United States. The rich and poor is a widening gap, and the top 1% and 0.01%s have more money than many of couldn’t even imagine. The corruption is what really inspires me to prove that this is affecting all Americans’ quality of life. Also, Senator Bernie Sanders running for President’s biggest ideologies is about the corrupt billionaire class and about the disappearing middle class. I know this is a relevant topic to today because of this and something many people, not just myself, are interested in.

I am not an economist, and also not very good at math, so all of my quantitative research will have to be data’s and numbers directly from Bureau’s about families income and trying to find out if the middle class has gone closer to the wealthy or to the poor in the last decade. I also want to try and discover patterns between the 20th and 21st centuries because history does tend to repeat itself. I want to survey UCF students and find out the majority consensus of what they believe the quality life of an American today is, why they believe it’s gone up or down, and how they believe the problem can be fixed. Many people think young people can’t make correct political or social inferences, but I believe our college campus is filled with such a variety of opinions that I can get a good idea of what the general population may believe.

I will go about this research by creating a survey and distributing it around classrooms of different subjects, sociology, history, math, business, and art classes. I believe these subjects cover all different areas of study and can produce different opinions. I will have to find out times of classes and ask the permission from teachers but I know it is possible because people have done it when I was in class before. Or, to not waste paper, I can make an online survey and try to get people on Facebook through a UCF page to answer my survey. i would like 100+ people to do my survey so I can get as much data as possible to compare and contrast.

  10. My research question is “What factors, specifically mental, help professional athletes recover from injuries faster than amateur athletes?” Originally my question was just along the lines of mental factors of recovery, but the articles I was able to find had a gap in the area of connections between mental capabilities and recovery speed differences in profession vs. amateur athletes.

To answer this question I am going to interview orthopedic doctors about their observations and beliefs on this subject. I also plan on adding to this research by including my observations of differences in recovery time from knee injuries in pro and amateur wakeboarders.

I will do my research by interviewing orthopedic doctors who deal mostly with athletes. I have a list of questions I am going to ask that are related to their belief of mental factors playing a role in recovery, whether they observe that professional athletes have certain mental practices and/or capabilities that most amateurs do not, and what other factors may help professional athletes be capable of a faster recovery than most. I’ll also include my observations, as I have a lot of friends, both professional and amateur, who have had very similar knee injuries but very different recovery times and outcomes.

  11. My research question is: What effects does parental divorce have on the children? I chose this question because my parents are divorced and I find it to be a topic close to my heart. Also everyone seems to have different effects from their parent’s divorce and I would like to find out what the effects are. I have found many articles on the topic and they all seem to have a different theory on the effects the divorce has on the children and I would like to find out for myself.
In my study I will focus on people over 18 whose parents have gotten divorced. I will also study the many articles I have found to get more articles and ideas for questions to ask my subjects.
To do my research I will be conducting a survey with multiple questions that people whose parents have divorced will answer so I can find out more information on how divorce effects the children. I would like to get a minimum of 100 subjects to fill out the survey but as many as possible would be great to get a more accurate answer to my question. I will choose subjects whose parents have been divorced in their lifetime.

  12. My research question is “To what extent are programs effectively helping emergency responders deal with psychological morbidities after being exposed to critical incidents?” This, however, was not the question I first started with. In the beginning, I was attempting to formulate a question that dealt solely with firefighters, and how the public perceived their job to be, in comparison to the realities of the job. Upon doing research, I struggled to find information that I believed would be useful. While researching though, I began to find several articles regarding whether or not Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) was actually helpful to firefighters who participated in it. I found this to be interesting, and then began attempting to create a question that would correlate well with this topic. Ultimately, this is the question that developed.

For my research, I will conduct a textual analysis. In my analysis, I will evaluate sources that deal with Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, and whether or not they are effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety, as well as other psychological morbidities that emergency responders experience after being exposed to critical incidents (i.e.: mass shootings, search and rescue missions, devastating car accidents). Additionally, I will analyze sources that pertain to evaluations of specific intervention programs such as Reach Out or Stay Connected, and assess how effective these programs actually were. Finally, I will analyze articles that discuss the most effective intervention programs, and what along with debriefing should be done to help responders entirely recover from symptoms of psychological morbidity.

  13. My research question is: To what extent does text messaging and social media effect interpersonal relationships of college age students? I arrived at the question because I spent 3.5 years of my high school career with a girlfriend always in constant contact with her. After we broke up I asked myself if we had a healthy relationship. I realized that we were always talking and I felt that constant contact might not be a good relationship structure. This is what led me to my research question.

I plan on studying relationships of my close friends that have long term girlfriends. I will also poll people that are Facebook freiends with me as well as class mates in all my classes. The people that will be polled are all college age students.

I hope to have at least 200 research subjects I will send out discussion topics on webcourses in hopes that I receive some feedback if I don't reach anyone there I will hand out flyers in my classes. I will ask four open ended questions as my questionnaire.

  14. My research question is: How does bias in the healthcare industry affect the patient-physician relationship, and in turn, the patient’s level of care? Recent controversies have proven that prejudice is still a prevalent issue in our society, and my major is Biomedical Sciences, which was why I decided to specifically research this topic. My original question specifically only mentioned biases such as gender, race, and sexual orientation but articles like “Stigmatization of AIDS patients by physicians” and “Burn care professionals' attitudes and practices regarding discussions of sexuality and intimacy with adult burn survivors” made me realize that bias can also be found via health conditions, which is very concerning. Although there were many articles that detailed the negative effects of bias on a patient, none of the studies went into detail on how exactly those problems could be fixed. The whole point of this research is for the benefit of the patient, and with no clear possible solutions, this issue will continue to harm patients.

Physicians are the main focus of my study. Doctors are the main health providers in the healthcare community and most research is focused on how their perceptions can affect a patient’s health.

I plan on interviewing at least 3 medical doctors on possible solutions to this issue, specifically primary care physicians as they have the most patient interaction out of all of the medical specialties. After doing textual analysis of the 10 sources I have obtained and recounting the information to the physicians, I plan on asking them specifically what could be done to remedy the issues seen in each source.

  15. Originally my research question was how cancerous tissue develops in young healthy tissue. Now it is How Upbeat Classical Music Effects the Memory of Student Athletes. I chose student athletes due to the high stress environment on constant memorization of both school work and play. These are often accompanied by music thus making them ideal candidates. Understanding how the classical music effects my chosen student athletes may help me draw conclusions on how to best study any form of material given to an individual. There are several articles written that focus on classical music in regular college aged individuals but none focus on individuals who are surrounded in a high multi stress environment.

As stated above, student athletes are my main focus and I will be interviewing and conducting my own research study with 14 soccer girls and 5 athletes from other sports.

Using the data I collect from the silent group and music group, I will analyze the short term and long term memory tests that are both auditory and visual. This then will give me a good perspective on whether the data collected in significanty significant.

  16. My research question is “Does having a communication disorder affect one’s social life and how can they overcome its influence so they may have a normal social life?” I arrived at this question because my major is communication disorders and sciences and I am currently enrolled in a class that talks about developmental psychology and it got me questioning the role that certain disorders might have on someone’s development. For example, speech problems can cause a child to shy away from social interaction and even get tongue tied from the stress (The Understood Team). Since I plan to help people overcome their speech disorders I thought it might be helpful to research not only the affects that speech problems have but ways that someone can overcome them.

The data I plan to collect comes mainly from textual analysis. I have found multiple articles and previous studies conducted on children and adults who have communication disorders. I also plan to interview my niece who has a mild speech problem where she can’t pronounce her “r’s” correctly.

To conduct my research, I plan on analyzing 8 articles/studies that talk about my research question. I also plan to have a 15 minute interview with my niece who has the speech problem and ask her a series of questions pertaining to the relationship between her speech problems and her social life at school, church, etc.

  17. My research question is: how does product color translate internationally? Originally I wanted to explore color’s influence on people, however that was too broad so I focused on color’s influence on business because of the variety of sources. While conducting research I noticed a lack of study on a global scale. The study that first introduced me to this gap was conducted by Labrecque and Milne.
I plan to collect my data through articles about different cultures color associations and how successful american products have been internationally.
I’m not completely sure how to conduct this research. I’m afraid I won’t find a sufficient amount of studies that are related to my niche but if that happens I could possibly interview an international marketing expert. With the resources I have I do not think I could conduct a study that would help with my research.

  18. My research question is: How much influence does Hollywood have on our political views?
My question was really important to me because as a voter in the upcoming presidential election it has been clear that Hollywood has influence in what they present to us in what we view. When researching this topic, I noticed that there is not an exact answer to how much influence but I have found in many researches that show what entertainment has influences either hidden in them or that are clearly stated.

For this research, I plan to study first time voters between the ages of 18-25. I chose this group because these are they people who are mostly effected by Hollywood’s influences.
